One woman has a novel idea for closing the pay gap between men and women: Make it easier for people to take some time off without the world ending.

If companies make it easier for workers to share information and skills, then those workers will be able to seamlessly sub for colleagues who need maternity leave or to skip out early for a dance recital, suggests Harvard economist Claudia Goldin. That could address one of the main causes of women getting paid less than men over the long run.

  1. There’s also the reality that a shorter workweek would be one way of getting the currently unemployed college grads into the work stream, an idea I endorse.
    After working weekends and evenings on my regular schedule, I found it hard to imagine not having weekday time available for the usual appointments and errands, though it did block a lot of other family events. Definitely could have used more flexibility there.
    The biggest time off, though, was a sabbatical I gave myself between jobs three decades ago. It ate up the savings but was worth every penny.
    The American workplace definitely needs some reform for the better.

    • I totally agree with you about needing reform. With everything that we have available to us, social media, the internet. People are able to work from anywhere and quality of life is very important. And I alot of the kids that are coming out of college are looking for more quality of life.
