On Tuesday, Angelina Jolie penned a piece in The New York Times called “My Medical Choice” in which she detailed her decision to have a preventative double mastectomy after learning that she had an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer.

The piece went viral instantly, inspiring a wave of impassioned responses from women — in the comments on the original piece, from new anchors and journalists, and all over Twitter.   1. I think it is also great that she did not feel the need to mention the obvious, that as someone whose value culturally has been defined by her appearance, she is making a further statement about a society in which women’s bodies are held forth as objects for public enjoyment.
