Chaka Khan: Inspiration Of A Music Icon

Brennan Williams

Nearly 40 years after entering the music business, Chaka Khan is still “Every Woman” as she continues to illuminate the lives of others through her music and philanthropic efforts.

With hopes of releasing her newest music project on her next birthday (March 23), the 10-time Grammy Award-winning singer is steadily busy as she prepares to embark on an international tour with super-producer David Foster later this year, in addition to appearing at the upcoming Essence Music Festival where she will be on hand to honor local New Orleans women, through her Chaka Khan Foundation, for their life changing achievements post-Hurricane Katrina.

The Huffington Post recently caught up with the funk/R&B powerhouse as she discussed her latest initiative, her recent weight loss, recording new music and her reaction to being a sex symbol.

In less than a month you will be in New Orleans during the Essence Music Festival where your Chaka Khan Foundation will honor 33 local women for their efforts with the SuperLife Transformation Program. What inspired you to get involved with the initiative?

A lot of these women, when I met them a year ago, some of them lived in their cars. The majority of the other women had seen if not one or more members of their family wiped out, gone. So these women were stressed out. I just couldn’t fathom going down to New Orleans to do the Essence Music Festival and not leaving some kind of door opening or something. But what we’re going to do is have testimonials, performances, and a graduation. And once people graduate they will become mentors themselves and pay it forward to the next group of women.

Will this be an ongoing effort for your foundation to continue at future Essence Music Festivals?

Absolutely. I’ve incorporated these women into my life. I’m taking the responsibility [for] standing up for them and being there for them, providing a lot of love and support.

In addition to your philanthropic efforts, you’ve also been working steadily with your music career. Are you currently recording a new album?

Yes, I’ve been working steadily, non-stop. I’m in the studio right now, trying to get a couple of tracks out there for people to hear over the summer. The album won’t be out until next year.

The album’s release next year also marks your 40th anniversary in the music industry.

Yes, it’s a big moment for me. I’m still in the mix, still doing it. And even a lot better now, because I’m in much better shape than I was in the last 10 years. So everything is going really well.

Inspirational Woman Of The Day: Giuliana Rancic

Giuliana Rancic (née DePandi; born August 17, 1974) is an Italian-American celebrity news personality. She is an anchor on E! News, the E! Network’s flagship entertainment news program.

In addition to her news anchoring duties, Rancic often co-hosts red carpet events for award shows, such as the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. On March 13, 2006, she was joined as anchor of E! News by Ryan Seacrest. She is the creator and executive producer of MTV’s Celebrity Rap Superstar, which premiered in 2007. She appeared in the movie Bring It On: Fight to the Finish in a brief scene. She also hosted the Miss USA 2011 beauty pageant on NBC. She is also the founder of FabFitFun, a woman’s health, beauty, and fashion site.

Giuliana Rancic was born in Italy. As a young girl, she immigrated to Bethesda, Maryland. She learned English by watching hours of news channels. She also said, on The E! True Hollywood Story, that from elementary school she had wanted to become an anchorwoman. After high school she went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a master’s degree in journalism from American University, at the American University School of Communication in Washington, D.C. While there, she reported for a Capitol Hill news bureau, covering the Pentagon, theSupreme Court, the White House and the State Department.

On December 15, 2006, Bill Rancic and Giuliana announced their engagement. The two were married on September 1, 2007 in a ceremony on Capri at Santa Sophia Church in Anacapri.

The two have publicly discussed their fertility issues on television talk shows, having tried to conceive since approximately the beginning of 2009. The couple began in vitro fertilization (IVF) in March 2010, and Rancic got pregnant in the spring of 2010; however, she suffered a miscarriage at nine weeks. Rancic had an IVF transfer for a second time in November 2010, however the procedure did not result in a pregnancy. The couple was going to try for a third round of IVF, and her doctor recommends a mammogram, then that’s where she found out she had breast cancer. With this condition, the couple are still motivated to have a baby so they went on with the egg retrieval and got a surrogate.

On April 23, 2012, Giuliana and Bill announced on The Today Show that they were expecting their first child, via gestational carrier. The baby is due in late summer.

It was announced on June 17, 2012, that Giuliana and Bill are expecting a boy.

On October 17, 2011 during an interview on Today, Rancic announced she had been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, for which she would be treated with a lumpectomy, followed by radiation. She underwent surgery in mid-October 2011 and returned to work at E! News about a week later. On December 5, 2011, Rancic disclosed she had decided to undergo a double mastectomy.
